I’ve taken quite a few surprise proposals before, but this was my first time when a client hired me to do “family portraits” in Heber, Arizona as a cover for a guy to pop the big question. Mechel, the organizer of everything and family member, reached out to book a family portrait session in Heber and told me it was a chance to capture updated photos while everyone was together. Then she informed me of the secret plan: group shots, individual family portraits, and then a few of each couple. But what her relative, Tiffany, didn’t know was that something much bigger was about to happen!

The entire family was in on the surprise. While we were capturing all the usual smiles and laughter, everyone was quietly buzzing with excitement. When it was time for Tiffany and Eric’s turn in front of the camera, Eric got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. I had the honor of photographing every second of her completely shocked and joy-filled reaction.

Even though the weather was cold, windy, and rainy, this family was so sweet, funny, and easy to work with. We moved through the shoot quickly so they could get back to the main house, warm up, and celebrate together. It was such a fun experience to be part of, and even more special knowing that everyone except Tiffany knew what was coming.

Tiffany and Eric are such a sweet couple, and I’m so excited for them as they begin this new chapter. If you’ve ever thought about planning a surprise proposal, weaving it into a family session is such a creative and memorable way to do it. Not only will you have your closest people there to celebrate, but you’ll also walk away with photos that tell the whole story from start to “yes.”
